I met this Italian hippy girl called Linda in Gladstone Park, where I’d go and sit under a tree and read Keats. She was playing guitar, smoking a spliff, and I just wandered over and said hello. Linda was really tall and really androgynous-looking, quite striking.
Years later she went back to Milan and turned up presenting a show on Italian MTV. We used to have these nights at her little house in Dollis Hill where shed cook pasta for me and we’d watch these films I rented out.
I watched Jules et Jim, another classic French New Wave movie, for first time at Linda’s, all about these two friends who fall in love with the same girl, a great film, directed by François Truffaut.
I showed it to Carl, and he was into it as well; in fact, Carl and I went on to try and live that film a few times, as you’ll discover.
